Exciting things
There have been lots of exciting things going on at East Meon CE Primary School-read on to
find out more about our 4 fantastic classes!
Oak Class
The Oak Class topic is Carle’s Creatures. The pupils have been reading books written by Eric
Carle and learning about the animals in his stories. They have used these books to help
them work on their writing-I have been so impressed with their beautiful sentences!
Oak class have also been working on pattern and counting in the maths session. The pupils
have been making towers to help them with their number skills.
Oak Class also loved having a visit from the Reptylers team. They were particularly
impressed with Mr Bubblegum, the chameleon as they have been reading Eric Carle’s ‘The
Mixed Up Chameleon’.
Willow Class
Willow Class finished their learning from their Dinosaurs topic and kick-started their topic
‘Paws and Claws’ by going on a fantastic trip to the Natural History Museum in London.
They were also lucky enough to experience the ‘Life in the Dark’ exhibition which took them
into the darkness of the night and the depths of the ocean to discover strange and unusual
creatures, some of which have only recently been discovered. You can see more photos

Willow Class have also had Reptylers in for a visit this week. Willow class had a more
extended in depth workshop and were able to handle many of the animals. The learned
about the 6 main animal groups and what different creatures do and use to survive in the
wild.
Holly Class
Holly Class enjoyed a fantastic visit from Iron Age Matt before half term. The pupils learned
about the difficulties of living as a warrior or as a home maker in the Iron Age. They were
able to handle artefacts and animal skins similar to those that would have been used to
make clothes and then in the afternoon they held an Iron Age battle on the school field.
This half term the pupils are deepening their understanding of early British history by
visiting Butser Ancient Farm to see replicas of Stone Age, Iron Age, Roman and Saxon
housing and even take part in a small on site dig!
Hazel Class
Hazel Class loved their topic ‘Scrumdidliumptious’ half term. The pupils learned all about
Fair Trade products, where they come from and considered their responsibilities as global
citizens. In DT, they worked on creating their own sweet brand. They had to consider their
target audience, marketing strategy and connotations of their colour scheme. To complete
this unit they were lucky enough to work with a professional chocolatier for the morning. In
this workshop they learned where chocolate really comes from and the science behind our
favourite treats!
This half term Hazel Class will be working on their topic ‘Brainiacs’ where they will be finding
out about inventions that have changed our world. They will also be conducting several
experiments of their own, learning how to measure and record results accurately and prove
or disprove a hypothesis.
Events
Book Week
Book week has been so much fun this year!
The pupils have had the chance to read with the parents, take part in an extreme reading
competition, dress up as their favourite characters, read in their houses with children from
other year groups and take part in an incredible carousel day!
Young Voices
On 30 th January East Meon CE Primary Choir headed to London to perform at the O2! Our
small choir joined over 8,000 other children from schools across the country-there were
even two schools from abroad! The 8,000 strong choir rehearsed all afternoon and in the
evening performed to an audience of over 10,000! I was extremely proud of the whole
choir-they were beautifully behaved and sang their hearts out! Well done everyone!

Last Years Events
Remembrance
A beautiful service of Remembrance was held at All Saints Church on the morning of the 11th November. I was extremely proud of our pupils who bore the school wreath and those that read such poignant, thoughtful prayers.
The evening event, ‘Battle’s Over’ was also fantastic and very well attended
and I was made to feel very proud when I attended the exhibition with work from all of our classes on display. Thank you to everyone who attended and to the History Group for working with the school to help us understand the reality of the lives of the soldiers and those they left behind.
Comic Relief
The pupils all enjoyed Children in Need day this year. They all brought a donation to school and wore pyjamas for the day. Oak Class even had a pyjama party! The event was organised by our School Council and raised over £100. Well done East Meon!
Bake Off
The East Meon Bake Off took place on 7th December. It was led by representatives from the Hampshire Catering Service and promoted the use of British produce and healthier options. The pupils worked together to make cupcakes that contained yoghurt as a replacement for a large amount of the sugar that would normally be in cakes. Older pupils supported younger pupils in the baking process and also in a task that required them to turn cream into butter. It was great fun and we all learned a lot!
Friends of East Meon School (FEMS)
A huge thank you must go out to the amazing FEMS team for the Christmas Fayre extravaganza that took place on Saturday 8th December. The school was filled with craft stalls, games and delicious food all aiming to raise funds for curriculum enrichment here at East Meon.
The whole afternoon was kicked off by the fantastic East Meon carollers who, despite several technical hitches, continued to sing and get everyone in the festive spirit. Then the arrival of Santa on his trailer driven by Rudolph really got the Fayre going. Fun was had by all. Thank you so much to everyone who supported the school on the day and a special thank you to Daniella Nicholls who led the organisation for this event.
FEMS also organised the Christmas Shopping Day, held in the school on Wednesday 12th December.
