A message from the Police of Hampshire Country Watch:

Living in a rural area does not mean we are immune from crime, hence some useful advice from Hampshire Country Watch:

A healthy level of suspicion is really beneficial to us – always put personal safety first and foremost but if someone comes across an incident they feel is suspicious, they could bear in mind the following:

– Consider evidence gathering – if safe and appropriate, use mobile phone to photo or video the incident or related persons/vehicles from a safe distance without making yourself obvious

– Consider evidence preservation – if something has happened, think about what the police might want to seize such as clothing or items used in the commission of the offence – if you can, avoid touching it with bare hands and place it in a plastic bag for police should it become relevant

– If an animal is involved, try and identify the animal in question and document (photograph) any injuries or marks present

– If you see something suspicious or you’re not sure about – consider calling 101 (obviously 999 if a crime is being committed there and then) or reporting online via the Hampshire Constabulary website ‘Report it’ function – we may just be able to build up a wider picture of intelligence

– Share knowledge – sharing information or descriptions within the community might help safeguard someone else – or go to your local Country Watch officers for advice

I would always suggest having your mobile phone on you and charged up when out and about anyway, but photos can be gathered when there is no signal and then reported when you get to an area with signal potentially.
